Helping Writers to Rise and Thrive

Writing for Middle-Grade and Young Adult Readers, Level Two

Fridays, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; Begins April 3, 2020
Victoria Sherrow
Seven weeks, $385 (Limited to six students)

This workshop focuses on developing stories for readers ages 8-18. As workshop members move from idea to completed manuscript, they learn what goes into a meaningful, dramatic plot, how to create realistic characters readers will care about, and ways to move a story along on both an “action level” and “emotional level.” We fine-tune skills in scene development, learn ways to show rather than tell, explore viewpoint, sensory description, dialogue, and theme development through group discussions, readings, and in-class exercises. During part of each class, participants can share pages from their works-in-progress and receive feedback from the instructor, Victoria Sherrow, and the rest of the group.

We aim to boost craft, creativity and confidence in a supportive and enjoyable setting.

Instructor Victoria Sherrow is the award-winning author of more than 100 books for children and teens, which have been published by Harper, Macmillan, Scholastic, National Geographic, Golden Books, Henry Holt, and others. She has taught writing for more than 20 years, and one of her greatest joys is watching her students achieve their writing goals, including publication.
