Helping Writers to Rise and Thrive

Writing for Children and Teens, Level One

Fridays, 10 a.m. to noon. Starts September 8, 2023
Victoria Sherrow
Seven weeks, $395 (Limited to six students)

Do you want to write for children and/or teens?

Maybe you have an idea you’d like to develop. Perhaps you’ve even written part of a story, picture book or chapter book—but you aren’t sure what to do next.

Writing for young readers offers special rewards. An author’s words can bring joy and comfort, teach and inform, and inspire children’s creativity, curiosity, and imagination.

Under the tutelage of master teacher and writer Victoria Sherrow, this workshop will help you learn how to entertain readers and keep their interest from start to finish. Using exercises designed to improve your skills, you will learn basic elements including viewpoint, plotting, sensory description, and pacing. You’ll learn how to create realistic characters and scenes that come to life for readers. You will be able to take your writing to the next level!

Writers may read their work in class for feedback in a positive, encouraging setting. This workshop is a place to experiment, learn, and have fun in the process.

Victoria Sherrow is the author of more than 150 books for children and teens, published by Harper, Macmillan, Scholastic, National Geographic, Golden Books, Henry Holt, and others. She has also written numerous short stories, articles, poems, and activity books for different age groups.

Victoria’s books have received numerous starred reviews and awards, including the Parents’ Choice Gold Award, Best Books for the Teenage, American Association for the Advancement of Science, YOYA award, and Vermont Reading Circle award. Twenty-six of her books have been featured in Best Books for Children, Preschool Through Grade 6 and Young Adult.

Victoria has taught writing for more than 20 years. She is a long-time member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and served as a judge for the SCBWI’s Golden Kite Award.

One of her greatest joys is watching her students achieve their writing goals, including publication. Victoria’s students have published stories, articles and books to major publishers including HarperCollins, Houghton Mifflin, Delacorte and Macmillan.

This workshop can be taken in-person at the Fairfield County Writers’ Studio in Fairfield, CT, or on Zoom. Your choice!
