Helping Writers to Rise and Thrive

PRE-SUMMER SAMPLER: I Want to Write for the Children’s Market. Now what?

Wednesdays, 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. ET. June 19 and 26
Victoria Sherrow
2 sessions, $110. Limited to seven participants. (Can be taken in-person or on Zoom.)

Do you want to write for children and/or teens? Whether you’re new to the table; already have an idea you’d like to develop; or have even written part of a story, picturebook or chapter book, master teacher and writer Victoria Sherrow can help you map out what’s next in this two-session workshop.

Victoria is the author of more than 150 books for children and teens, published by Harper, Macmillan, Scholastic, National Geographic, Golden Books, Henry Holt, and others. She has written stories, articles, poems, and activity books for different age groups. Despite this personal success, one of her greatest joys is watching her students achieve their writing goals, including publication. Victoria’s current and previous students have published stories, articles and books with major publishers including HarperCollins, Houghton Mifflin, Delacorte and Macmillan.

Whether you’d like to bring joy and comfort to a young reader with your work, to teach and inform them, or to inspire a child’s creativity, curiosity, and imagination, Victoria will patiently, expertly lead you through the labyrinth of this market.

This mini workshop will help you learn how to entertain young readers and keep their interest from start to finish. Using exercises designed to improve your skills, you will learn basic elements including viewpoint, plotting, sensory description, and pacing. You will get a jump-start on crafting a compelling plot and characters for your picturebook, middle-grade or young adult novel, which you can work on at your own pace over the summer and then be ready to jump into more serious work in the fall!

Victoria has taught writing for more than 20 years. She is a long-time member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and has served as a judge for the SCBWI’s Golden Kite Award. She lives in Westport.
