Helping Writers to Rise and Thrive

Mini Workshop: Picture Book Primer

Thursday, December 30, 2021
Victoria Sherrow
10 to noon, EST. $20

NOTE: Live on Zoom. In-person for the FULLY VACCINATED!

Join Victoria Sherrow as she leads you through a sampler of her awesome picture-book workshop! In the process, help support moms and little ones in need.

In this two-hour, in-person gathering, you’ll learn about different types of picture books, including “slice of life” stories, fantasy, realistic stories, folktales, talking animals, and more. You’ll hear how picture-book writers shape an idea into a manuscript with “child appeal.” Victoria will touch on techniques for plotting, character development, description, viewpoint, and pacing.

Style and presentation are especially important, so we’ll discuss ways to give the manuscript a pleasing rhythm and “read-aloud” qualities, with a text that flows well and fits the picture book format. You’ll learn what editors are looking for. Why do they say “yes” to some manuscripts and reject others?

Maybe you have ideas you’d like to explore, or you have already drafted a book, but you aren’t sure what to do next. Victoria can help. She is the award-winning author of more than 100 fiction, non-fiction and picture books for children and teens, published by Harper, Macmillan, Scholastic, National Geographic, Golden Books, Henry Holt, and others.

Victoria’s books have received starred reviews and numerous awards, including the Parents’ Choice Gold Award, Best Books for the Teenage, American Association for the Advancement of Science, YOYA award, and Vermont Reading Circle award. Twenty-six of her books have been featured in Best Books for Children, Preschool Through Grade 6 and Young Adult.

Spend an enjoyable and creative morning and meet other writers!

This event is open to the public. Suggested donation is $20 and benefits Malta House in Norwalk. NEW picture books, diapers, formula and baby food are also gratefully accepted. You must be fully vaccinated to attend.
